How do personal stories and shared human experiences find their way into the shape, texture and colour of a ceramic object? This is a question I explore through my work.

Of all materials available to an artist, clay is my first choice. I am drawn to its balance of pliability and resistance, and to the possibilities that emerge through the dialogue between the material and my hands. My hand-built abstract forms develop intuitively, without sketches or predetermined plans. Memories and experiences feed into the making process, shaping the work as it unfolds.

Born in Silesia, Poland, I moved to Germany at the age of eight, and later to the UK as an adult. I now live on a small farm in rural Herefordshire, where the natural world is a constant source of inspiration for my work. My experience of migration also informs my practice, finding expression in the juxtaposition of outer surfaces and hidden interiors, as well as the delicate interplay between disruption, imbalance and restoration.

The surface treatment of my ceramics reflects a lifelong fascination with the vibrant colours and intricate textures of Central European folk costumes.

The ongoing process of balancing visual elements such as form, colour and texture is partially visceral but also requires conscious judgement and decision making. This is the challenge that allows me to connect with personal histories, cultural memories and human experiences and to explore how these might be held and expressed within a ceramic object.
